Bye Bye Facebook

What do you do when a benefit to your most amazing customers is suddenly not working for them anymore? Simple – you change it.

We’ve determined that running our online community in a Facebook group isn’t working well for us anymore, so we’re making a change.

Since the beginning, we’ve wanted our community to be able to connect and collaborate outside of the building – beyond physical coworking. Being “in the office” was never meant to be the only benefit to having a coworking membership at Haven Collective. As freelancers, entrepreneurs, and work-from-home parents, you don’t (and usually can’t) work a traditional Monday through Friday, 9-to-5, right? We never thought everyone would be in the office at the same time, all the time because being together doesn’t mean it’s always physical. That’s why it was important for us to establish a private Facebook group so we could be together any day, any time, and from anywhere.

Facebook worked well for a while, providing our community with a wonderful safety net for continued growth and connection while staying home, but then COVID-19 hit and things changed…the world changed…

5 reasons Facebook no longer meets our needs:

  1. No Facebook. Simply put: not everyone wants to be on Facebook. We missed our members who were very active in the real world but didn’t want to be on Facebook. We don’t think not wanting to be on Facebook should be the reason you can’t connect with your fellow coworkers.

  2. Ugh, so much social media. We agree, Facebook is a high-anxiety space! After spending weeks at home with 24/7 news (real and fake) and homeschooling, members were actually spending LESS time on social media because it was increasing anxieties at a time when no one needed any more of that. We want you to be able to connect with us when you want without causing you to be more stressed.

  3. Distracted much? Facebook is a huge distraction. How many times have you opened up Facebook to intentionally look for one thing or to hop directly into a group you love, but then wake up some time in the future, having lost hours to the rabbit hole of notifications, news, pictures, videos, memes, and senseless posts? Whoa. Getting $h!t done means focus, not more distraction.

  4. Can’t trust this. When even big brands and advertisers can’t trust Facebook, why should we? Lies and deceit without recourse. Algorithm and data scandals without repercussion. Fake news and hate speech without responsibility. It’s time. We’re going to find a platform that doesn’t just work better, but behaves better, too.

  5. Not our own space. Private groups on Facebook are leased, not owned. They not only limit how we can use their space and what we can post, but they can change the rules of the game itself. Our community deserves a space we own, one we control together, and where we don’t have to play by their rules on making sure the content you get is true and valuable.

Before the pandemic, we might have kept on using the private Facebook group, but the world has shifted beneath our feet and it’s time to make a conscientious move to a better place and platform.

So, here’s what we’re going to do…

In the next few weeks, we’ll be making the transition away from Facebook Groups and onto a new platform that’s specifically dedicated for Haven Collective members where we can engage with each other virtually. All Haven Collective members will be able to socialize, collaborate, and share content with one another directly on our new platform.

We look forward to ‘seeing’ you in this new space.
